Darling House in Crouch End, London

Darling House in Crouch End, London
Alan Crawford Partnership Architects

This striking modern house in a leafy north London neighbourhood was built on the site which had previously contained two lock up garages. The space was limited, but Alan Crawford architects managed to squeeze out a 3 bedroom house on 3 levels, including an outdoor area bringing air and light, to all levels for the young owner Mike. Black bricks and charred black larch wood panelling on the exteriors were utilised throughout to impart a modern look, with a youthful twist added by the use of primary colourful in the detailing, such as in the yellow door, and in the furnishings. Some of the architectural features were left exposed, notably the massive curved oak beams supporting the roof on the upper floor, adding a cutting edge and post modern feeling to the building. Natural light floods into the interior via the lightwell and ceiling windows in all rooms.
