About Adam Butler

Hi there! Thanks for dropping by!
I have been an architecture and interiors photographer for over 25 years, photographing beautiful homes and buildings all over the world, and my images have been published as features in many of the leading interiors magazines worldwide, including AD Italia, Casa Vogue, Elle Decor, Homes and Gardens, Spazio Casa, etc.
See my latest publication in AD Italia magazine – April 2023
I am based in London with my family, but I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and have Italian descent. Whenever possible, I try to escape to a family home we have in the Aeolian island of Panarea.
I survived the Courtauld Institute of Art, where I gained a degree in art history.
I also shoot panoramic cityscapes, as well as Mediterranean views and landscapes, and my images are in numerous private, corporate and local government collections worldwide.
These you can see on my other website www.adambutler.com
Apart from photography, my other interests include cycling, golf, swimming, snorkelling, reading behavioural economics books and playing the classical guitar. I try to eat healthily, not drink too much and restrict coffee to one a day. Neither of these is easy though 😉
I have two children, and one wonderful wife, Frédérique.
I am very much inspired by the lifetime’s work of my father, the sculptor Vincent Butler (1933-2017), a poet of the human form in bronze. My father-in-law is the French-Canadian novelist Roch Carrier.
Some of the other artists who inspire me are the cool, offbeat narrative imagery of Edward Hopper, Wilhelm Hammershøi and Balthus, the cityscapes and “vedute” views of Canaletto, Bellotto, Van Lint, Vanvitelli and de Valenciennes, and the sheer visual joy in the work of some of the contemporary Scottish colourists such as Leon and Alberto Morrocco, and Glen Scouller.
I am available for commercial commissions in or around London UK.

I have an extensive database of photographs, including London cityscapes, views of Panarea and the Aeolian Islands, various landscapes and other images, and these are all available to be licensed for any sort of commercial, editorial, or advertising use. They are not licensed anywhere else.
I also teach a series of photography courses that are open to anyone of any level, and are essential to improve photography skills, and ultimately to make magnificent images, which after all is what photography is all about.
For photography nerds like me, I currently shoot with Nikon cameras, although for many years I also used Hasselblad film and digital cameras. I love exploring and reading about new equipment and digital imagery techniques, I adore working with Photoshop, and for the nerds like me you can read about the photographic equipment I use.

A book of my photographs of Panarea was published in 1998 by Iditella Press, and some copies are still available. A new book of that most beautiful of islands is currently in (long-term) planning….

I wrote most of this book! That’s what an education at the Courtauld Institute leads to…
Read an interview with me, my photography work, and living between London and Panarea in Silvia Novelli’s blog “Una Dose Quotidiana di Bellezza“, published June 2019.
I was recently featured in an article in a London Visual Arts blog by Alessandra de Costanzo
