Evening Panoramic View over the rooftops, spires and cupolas of Edinburgh with the illuminated Castle, and the hills of Fife in the distance.

Edinburgh Castle

Evening colours of the ancient and beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland capital.

Edinburgh is my hometown, where I was born, and a city I still love. I have lived in London for over 30 years now, and much of my cityscape photography has clearly been based on that city, but the beauty of Edinburgh is still enthralling, captivating and unique.

In this image, I strove to capture the magnificence of the castle which dominates the city, at with the rich, crepuscular blue tones of late evening, just before night falls over the city, and with the warm illuminations of the buildings and from the myriads of windows picked out as little sparkling jewels strewn out across the scene, glowing over the tiled rooftops of the rows of houses.

The castle is set against the backdrop of the Royal Kingdom of Fife, with its hill stretching out into the distance, merging with the clouds rolling in. To the right are visible the Gothic, Classical and Victorian spires, domes. cupolas and turrets of the many churches and buildings running down from the castle on the ancient Old Town of Edinburgh, including the Hub (Edinburgh’s tallest point) towards the Tron Church, St. Giles Cathedral, the Camera Obscura viewpoint, as well as the green domes of the University buildings and even the Scott Monument.

A truly breathtaking skyline!

I normally try to shoot all of my high resolution prints with the unparalleled quality of my Hasselblad medium format camera, but for logistical purposes I often use my Nikon, as I did here. However, using the very best (and very expensive!) fixed focal lenses as I do (in this case the unbelievable Nikon prime 300mm f2.8 VR lens), and the most stringent technique, the resulting image quality is astounding. This image can be printed to any size, and rest assured the sharpness and quality will be as breathtaking as the view.
