This is a view taken from atop a mountain in the Aeolian Island of Lipari, looking over a bay known as the “Cava di Pomice”.
This mountainside is where pumice stone has been excavated since ancient times, and as a consequence the soft white pumice sand infuses the sea surrounding the beach in the myriads of beautiful green and turquoise hues.
This image was taken in 1995. Sadly, the picturesque old iron and wood jetty has now completely collapsed into the sea. It was used as a platform for loading ships, but the pumice stone industry has recently declined on Lipari.
Aeolian Sea can be ordered to hang on your wall as a limited edition fine art print.
