This is a view taken from atop a mountain in the Aeolian Island of Lipari, looking over a bay known as the “Cava di Pomice”.
This mountainside is where pumice stone has been excavated since ancient times, and as a consequence the soft white pumice sand infuses the sea surrounding the beach in the myriads of beautiful green and turquoise hues.
This image was taken in 1998. Sadly, the picturesque old iron and wood jetty has now completely collapsed into the sea. It was used as a platform for loading ships, but now the pumice stone industry has now declined on Lipari.
